How to choose the right model
How to choose the right model airplane?
Choosing an airplane model can be a bit complicated for a beginner. At first glance, the models look similar, but in reality they differ significantly in size, material and overall workmanship. Some models are small metal collectibles for a display case, others are large detailed models intended as the dominant exhibit of a collection. The manufacturer also makes a difference, because each uses slightly different materials and production technology.
The basic parameter is the scale of the model. This determines how many times the model is smaller than the real aircraft. For example, a scale of 1:200 means that the model is two hundred times smaller than the real aircraft. The smaller the second number, the larger and more detailed the model usually is.
For commercial aircraft, the most popular scales are 1:500, 1:400 and 1:200. Each of them has its own advantages and is suitable for a different type of collector.
The 1:500 scale is ideal especially for larger collections. The models are small, compact and do not take up much space, so it is possible to display dozens of different aircraft next to each other. Despite their small size, these models are very nicely crafted. Most 1:500 scale models are produced as metal die-cast models.
The 1:400 scale is also very popular, which is often considered the best compromise between size and detail among collectors of airliners. The models are large enough to make the details stand out, but at the same time still practical for regular display in a display case. In this scale, these are almost always full-metal models that look very realistic and of high quality.
The biggest differences between manufacturers can be found in the 1:200 scale. Here it depends not only on the model itself, but also on the specific brand. Some manufacturers, such as JC Wings or Aviation200, produce mainly full-metal die-cast models with a very high level of detail. These models tend to be heavier, have detailed landing gear, antennas, high-quality printing and often look like a real premium collector's product.
On the other hand, Herpa, for example, offers more variants in the 1:200 scale. In addition to metal models, it also produces lighter plastic models that are more affordable and less burdensome on the display case. A specific category is the so-called snap-fit models. These are made of plastic and are supplied as simple models without the need for gluing. The wings or landing gear are simply snapped into prepared holes. Snap-fit models are ideal for beginners, office decoration or as a gift.
For larger scales, such as 1:100 or 1:72, a combination of materials is often used. The fuselage can be metal, while smaller parts are usually plastic. The reason is mainly the weight of the model and safety during handling.
For military aircraft, the scales 1:72 and 1:144 dominate. The 1:72 scale is very popular due to its high level of detail and realistic appearance. It is ideal for fighters, historical military aircraft and modern jets. The smaller 1:144 scale is especially suitable for collectors who want a larger number of models in a smaller space.
When choosing a model, it is therefore a good idea to think about what you expect from the model. If you want an extensive collection of many airlines, smaller scales such as 1:500 or 1:400 are usually the best choice. If you are looking for a distinctive detailed model that will dominate the display case, a quality die-cast model in 1:200 scale is ideal. And if you are just starting out with models, snap-fit models can be a great entry into the world of aircraft modeling.
Whatever scale you choose, a quality aircraft model is not just an ordinary decoration. For many collectors, it represents a combination of technology, history, design and a passion for aviation.
Are aircraft models suitable for children?
Classic collector's models, especially metal die-cast models in scales of 1:400 or 1:200, are primarily intended for display. They contain many small details, antennas, landing gear or thin parts that can be damaged during play. Therefore, they are not suitable for small children.
For children, we recommend a special category of children's models and toys of the "Toy Plane" type. These models are made of more durable materials, often solid plastic, have a simpler construction and are adapted to everyday play. They can usually handle falls, more frequent handling and do not have as many fragile details as collector's models.
How do pre-orders work?
A pre-order works as a reservation for a model that is not yet physically in stock, even with us as a seller. The manufacturer first announces the model and only then does its production and distribution take place.
Thanks to a pre-order, you are sure that the model will be delivered to you immediately after it is in stock. With limited editions or popular new products, it often happens that the models are sold out before they are delivered to the warehouse and are no longer available to customers without a reservation.
The time between placing a pre-order and the actual delivery can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer. Some companies adhere to the deadlines very precisely, while others regularly postpone the release dates. In general, GeminiJets and JC Wings are among the most reliable manufacturers in terms of delivery dates. On the other hand, Herpa often extends the release dates.
